Omega has been the official Olympic timekeeper for nearly a century and put the Speedmaster on the wrist of every Apollo astronaut. Its modern Co-Axial and Master Chronometer movements resist magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss — a genuine engineering edge over most rivals.

What to look for

Details worth checking before you trust a dial. None of them certify authenticity on their own.

• A model and serial number engraved on the caseback or between the lugs
• Sharp, applied Omega logo and printed 'Co-Axial' / 'Master Chronometer' text on the dial
• A helium escape valve at 10 o'clock on many Seamaster divers
• Correct lume plots and a domed sapphire crystal on modern pieces

Facts

• The Speedmaster was flight-qualified by NASA in 1965 and worn on the first Moon walk in 1969.
• 'Seamaster' predates the dive-watch craze — it launched in 1948 as a water-resistant dress watch.
