About Grand Seiko

Grand Seiko began as Seiko's answer to Swiss chronometry and is now its own luxury maison. Its Zaratsu-polished cases show distortion-free mirror surfaces, and its textured dials — 'Snowflake', 'Birch', 'Mt. Iwate' — are inspired by the landscapes around its studios. It is the only house building three movement types at the top level: mechanical, Spring Drive, and high-precision quartz.

What to look for

Details worth checking before you trust a dial. None of them certify authenticity on their own.

• The 'GS' emblem and 'Grand Seiko' now sits at 12 o'clock (post-2017 dial branding); older pieces read 'Seiko' at 12 with 'GS' below
• Zaratsu polishing — hold it to a light and the flat surfaces mirror with no orange-peel distortion
• A perfectly smooth, gliding seconds hand indicates a Spring Drive
• Hairline-sharp, diamond-cut hands and indices with no rounded edges

• The 'Grammar of Design' (1967) codifies GS's flat, light-catching case geometry.
• A Spring Drive seconds hand does not tick — it sweeps with true continuous motion.
