Jumping Hour
The hour snaps into a window instead of sweeping.
What it does
A disc carries the hour numerals and jumps instantly to the next hour on the hour, displayed through an aperture. It stores energy in a spring across the hour and releases it in one movement, which is harder than it sounds — the jump must be instant and must not disturb timekeeping.
How to read it
The hour appears as a numeral in a window; minutes are read from a conventional hand or a second disc. If the numeral sits half-in and half-out of the window for more than a moment, the jumper needs attention.
Impact on value
Positive — visually distinctive and mechanically demanding. Cartier's Tank à Guichets and Lange's Zeitwerk are the reference points.
